Can you believe it? We are less than 20 sleeps away from Christmas. Where did the year go? Overall, it has been a pretty good year for a lot of us. #1 proud to be Canadian and where I live.

As vacation time approaches with the winter coming on many of us have children or pets that need care while we are away. My children have grown so I don’t have to worry about them, help with the grandchildren, but it is my pets that give me concern. Our dogs mainly and of course the farm cats.

As modern-day working parents, the majority will research daycare before placing their children in daycare. Many families depend on daycare for their children either full-time or part-time depending on work situation. Some families work shift work and can have one parent at home a lot of the time. Others may have part time jobs and others are requiring full time care.

When it comes to researching a daycare, parents spend a lot of time researching the facility, background checks on the people running it, talking to other parents who leave their children there, etc. Parents only want the best care they can give their children when they can’t.

Which leads me to my next discussion.

Owning a dog in our senior years can bring immense joy and numerous benefits. Dogs provide companionship, which can help alleviate feelings of loneliness and depression that some seniors may experience. The unconditional love and loyalty of a dog can offer emotional support and a sense of purpose. Moreover, having a dog encourages regular physical activity through daily walks and playtime, which is essential for maintaining good health and mobility. Additionally, the routine care of a dog, such as feeding and grooming, can help seniors stay active and engaged in daily activities.

When considering a dog in our senior years, it’s important to think about the breed and size that would best fit our lifestyle and living situation. Smaller breeds might be easier to manage, while some seniors might prefer a more active dog to match their own energy levels. It’s also essential to consider any health concerns and how a dog’s needs can be met during any potential medical situations.

How much time have we put into considering dog day care and boarding overnight? Finding the right dog boarding facility is crucial for the well-being of your furry friend as well as yourself. Our pets are just as important to us as our children are or were. Whether you are going on a vacation or have a busy work schedule, a trustworthy boarding facility can provide a safe and

comfortable environment for your dog. These next points will help you navigate the process of researching and selecting the best dog boarding facility for you and your pet.

Understand Your Dog’s Needs

Before you start your search, consider your dog’s specific needs. Factors such as age, health, temperament, and special requirements will play a major role in finding the ideal boarding facility.

* Age: Puppies may need more attention and playtime, while older dogs might require special accommodations and medical care.

* Health: Dogs with medical conditions will need facilities equipped to handle their medications and any emergencies.

* Temperament: Some dogs are more social and enjoy the company of other dogs, while others may prefer solitude.

* Special Requirements: Dietary restrictions, exercise routines, and other specific needs should be considered.

Start Your Research

Once you have a clear understanding of your dog’s needs, you can begin researching boarding facilities. Here are some steps to help you get started:

Online Research

The internet is a valuable resource for finding potential boarding facilities. Utilize search engines, social media, and review websites to gather information.

* Search Engines: Use keywords like “dog boarding facility near me” or “best dog boarding facilities” to find local options.

* Social media: Check platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and community groups for recommendations and reviews.

* Review Websites: Websites like Yelp, Google Reviews, and TripAdvisor provide ratings and feedback from other pet owners.

Word of Mouth

Personal recommendations can be invaluable. Speak to friends, family, and your veterinarian to get their insights and experiences with local boarding facilities. For a lot of us this is easier than navigating the internet.

Evaluate the Facilities

Once you have a list of potential facilities, it’s time to evaluate them. Here are some key factors to consider:

Visit the Facility

Schedule visits to each facility on your list. A personal visit will give you a better sense of the environment and how well your dog will be cared for. This is extremely important. A lot of places we have checked never let us behind the front desk. They will show pictures, but what is it really like?

* Cleanliness: Check if the facility is clean and well-maintained.

* Staff: Observe the staff’s behavior and interaction with the dogs. Are they friendly and knowledgeable?

* Security: Ensure the facility is secure and has measures in place to prevent escapes.

* Activities: Inquire about the daily routine and activities provided for the dogs.

* Accommodations: Look at the sleeping areas and ensure they are comfortable and safe. How many dogs in each stall? Or are they using crates only – and if so, are the crates equipped with beds and enough room for your dog.

Ask Questions

Prepare a list of questions to ask during your visit. Here are some suggestions:

* What is the staff-to-dog ratio?

* Are there any additional fees for special services?

* What is the protocol for medical emergencies?

* How are the dogs grouped for play and socialization?

* Do they provide regular updates and photos of your dog?

* Is somebody always there with the dogs? Are they ever left alone? How safe is the facility whether it is in a business facility or a home.

Check Certifications and Credentials

Verify that the facility is licensed and accredited by relevant organizations. Certifications can indicate the facility adheres to high standards of care. Are they licensed in their town or city?

Review Policies and Procedures

Understanding the facility’s policies and procedures is crucial for ensuring your dog’s safety and well-being.

Vaccination Requirements

Ensure the facility requires up-to-date vaccinations for all boarding dogs. This helps prevent the spread of diseases between dogs.

Feeding and Medication

Ask about the facility’s procedures for feeding and administering medication. Make sure they can accommodate your dog’s dietary needs and medical schedule.

Emergency Protocols

Inquire about their emergency protocols. It’s important to know how they handle medical emergencies and if they have a veterinarian on call.

Trust Your Instincts

After visiting the facilities and gathering all necessary information, trust your instincts. Did you take your dog with you? How did your furry friend react? Tug at their leash and not want to stay. Dogs have very good instincts too. Choose the facility where you feel most comfortable and confident about leaving your dog.

Conclusion

Researching a dog boarding facility takes time and effort, but it’s worth it to ensure your pet’s comfort and safety. By understanding your dog’s needs, conducting thorough research, evaluating the facilities, and reviewing policies and procedures, you can make an informed decision and find the perfect boarding facility for your furry friend.

Following this guide will help you find a reliable dog boarding facility where your pet will be happy and well-cared for during your absence.

Over the years we have had awesome facilities; however, to say the least the last time I left my dogs in dog care – it was not a good experience. My little miniature schnauzer suffered anxiety for over half an hour after he was picked up. We have made the decision that if a family member is not available they come with us or we don’t go.

And don’t forget, there are people who dog sit, and will come and stay at your home with your pet and make sure their days are as close to the same as when you are with them. I have found this is often the best alternative for dog care. And often the price isn’t much different from boarding them at a facility. But you get peace of mind. And your dog is always most comfortable either with you or at home.

If we are going away and a family member is not available to look after the pets, we book an AirBnB and take the furry critters with us.

Now for a song. A very popular artist is Lainey Wilson. She has won many awards and is very popular amongst country artists. She released a posthumous duet with the late Bing Crosby “Let it Snow, Let it Snow”. Modern technology combined her voice with Bing, a modern twist and is very well done. This song is also used as a commercial for Hershey chocolate on YouTube for an animated version.

Have a very Merry Christmas Holiday season and New Year! 2026 here it comes!
