Raiders fall in overtime in heavyweight tilt with Oil Kings

With wins in six straight games and sitting one point back of the Oil Kings, Saturday’s rematch of last year’s first round of the playoffs was a big one for the Prince Albert Raiders. The two teams put on a show in a fast paced, tight checking, and surprisingly disciplined game from both teams, but the Oil Kings would walk away with the win 3-2 in overtime.

The Oil Kings struck first when Lukas Sawchyn set up Parker Alcos for a onetimer at the left point, but Alcos faked the shot and instead found Adam Jecho at the side of the goal who tapped home his second of the season at 5:05.

After the Raiders killed off a high sticking penalty for Alisher Sarkenov, the Raiders then scored at the 15:29 mark to tie it. As the Oil Kings were leaving their own zone, Max Heise picked the pocket of one of the Oil Kings at the blueline, then quickly passed it to Riley Boychuk. With his head up looking to pass, Boychuk cut to the net and fired a wrist shot for his second of the season, extending his point streak to nine games.

After 1: Raiders 1 – 1 Oil Kings, shots 6-6

While the first period was a dead even chess match, the Raiders started to find some momentum in the second period. Early on, Daxon Rudolph was called for interference when he knocked down Joe Iginla, but Iginla was given a call for embellishment and that resulted in 4-on-4 less than two minutes in.

Even with the ice opened up 4-on-4, the Raiders and Oil Kings still made it difficult to enter the offensive zone with the puck. Early in the period, Aiden Oiring tried to slip free on a breakaway, but was hooked and sent to centre for the penalty shot. On that penalty shot, Oiring beat the goaltender but hit the post.

After a penalty kill, the Raiders took the lead. Oli Chenier on the cycle played the puck from the right wall into the middle of the blue line for Brock Cripps. He drew two forwards before sending a great feed through the air to Benett Kelly on the left side, and Kelly walked in towards the goal before firing a wrist shot past a sliding defender and a screen for his first goal in the WHL at 14:20.

Less than a minute later, and the Oil Kings tied it. At 15:14, a scramble play off a faceoff would come to Joe Iginla in the slot, and he fired along the ice to score unassisted and tie the game again.

After 2: Raiders 2 – 2 Oil Kings, shots 10-4 Raiders, 16-10 Raiders overall

The Raiders had only one chance on the powerplay in the first two periods, but they failed to score. In the final four minutes of the game however, the Raiders were given a big chance when Noa Ta’amu tripped Jonah Sivertson at the side of the goal, and less than a minute later Landon Hanson cleared the puck all the way down the length of the ice and over the glass. 5-on-3 for the Raiders for 57 seconds.

On that 5-on-3, Oil Kings defender Ethan MacKenzie got an early clear, and then made a great play to step up to his own blue line and take the puck away for the clear.

After 3: Raiders 2 – 2 Oil Kings, shots 6-5 Raiders, 22-15 Raiders overall

In overtime, MacKenzie would play hero again but this time in the offensive zone. After receiving the puck from Miroslav Holinka on the cycle, MacKenzie walked down towards the right side of the slot before he fired a wrist shot off the bar and in for his third of the year.

FINAL (OT): Raiders 2 – 3 Oil Kings, shots 2-0 Oil Kings, 22-17 Raiders overall

Especially in the second period, the Raiders had tons of chances to score that they’ll want back. Alisher Sarkenov was denied by the stick of Ethan Simcoe while he was spread out looking for the rebound, Aiden Oiring hit the post on his penalty shot, and Oli Chenier beat the goaltender but not the cross bar all in the same period.

With a goal on the night, Riley Boychuk continues his hot streak to nine games with a point, 2G-9A-11P in that time.

While the loss does snap the Raiders win streak at six games in a row, the Raiders still have not suffered a regulation loss nine games in with a 7-0-2 record. The only other team in the WHL without a regulation loss is the Everett Silvertips with a record of 9-0-1.

The Raiders have the rest of the week off before they take on the Swift Current Broncos in the final game of a six game homestand.
