Raiders keep pointstreak running through strong penalty kill effort over Rebels

With three wins and an overtime loss to start the season, the Prince Albert Raiders started a six game homestand on Saturday night against the Red Deer Rebels. The game got rough with some big hits that lead to fights, but the Raiders weathered the storm and kept their point streak alive with a 4-1 win.

The Raiders started the period on fire, clogging up the neutral ice and hardly giving the Rebels a chance to exit their side of the ice through the first period. The Raiders were able to put some pretty passing plays together, but the group of Ty Meunier, Linden Burrett, and Jonah Sivertson were the only ones to finish the play.

First at the 3:56 mark, Burrett made a great pass from his own zone to Meunier at centre. As they crossed the blue line, Meunier gave the puck to Sivertson on the right wall, and Sivertson then waited before sending a perfect saucer pass behind the defencemen and right on to Meunier’s stick. Meunier then buried a wrist shot for his third of the year.

Then at 13:50, the Raiders were on the forecheck and Meunier had the puck behind the net, to the right of the goaltender. Meunier sent the pass out from below the goal line to Burrett at blueline to the goaltender’s left. Burrett found a perfect seam back to the goalie’s right where Sivertson managed to hammer a onetimer into the back of the net for his first as a Raider.

After 1: Raiders 2 – 0 Rebels, shots 13-3 Raiders

The second period started with some 4-on-4 after slightly offset penalties at the end of the first. While playing 4-on-4, the Rebels scored 31 seconds into the period when Matthew Gard fired a shot that Dimitri Fortin got a piece of with his glove, but it managed to find it’s way in.

About five minutes into the period, Brayden Dube was trying to exit the zone out the right side, but as he turned up ice he was rocked with a clean hit by Ty Thurston, and Matyas Man quickly shed the gloves to protect his teammate in a quick fight. Linden Burrett also got into a fight on the same play with Nolan Schmidt. Dube recovered and played the rest of the game.

Penalties were traded back and forth but neither team was able to use their momentum to score until the Raiders found the back of the net at 17:42. After the Raiders finished a penalty kill, Oli Chenier sent a puck off the right wall in his own zone to spring Brayden Dube on a breakaway with Ben Harvey following close behind. Dube held the puck as close to the goaltender that he could until the goaltender bit and reached for the puck. Dube dropped the puck to Harvey, and he slammed his second of the season into the back of the net.

Then with the Raiders on the powerplay, Daxon Rudolph made a great hold on the puck at the blueline and shoveled it to his right for Riley Boychuk on the right wall. Boychuk used the space he had to close in on goal, opening a cross ice pass to Dube who settled the puck, waited for the defenceman to screen his goaltender, then fired a wrist shot short side for his forth of the year at 18:57.

After 2: Raiders 4 – 1 Rebels, shots 8-4 Raiders, 21-7 Raiders overall

The third period saw a more penalties handed either way, including another lengthy 4-on-4, but again neither team was really able to take control of the game.

Late in the game, Jonah Sivertson was run from behind by Landon MacSwain, and that resulted in another scrum along the wall, but the officials were able to break any fights up before they could happen.

FINAL: Raiders 4 – 1 Rebels, shots 12-7 Rebels, 28-19 Raiders overall

The Raiders powerplay went 1/5 on the night despite some great chances, especially on a powerplay in the third where they had three grade A chances in the first 30 seconds. On the penalty kill, the WHL website shows the Raiders went a perfect 13/13, but that will likely get corrected to 8/8.

The combination of Linden Burrett (0G-2A), Ty Meunier (1G-1A), and Jonah Sivertson (1G-1A) each had two points on the night.

Brayden Dube also had two points on the night with 1G-1A, leading the team with 4G-3A-7P in the first five games. Right behind him are Riley Boychuk with 0G-6A-6P and Daxon Rudolph with 2G-4A-6P, both of which had an assist on the night.

The Raiders are off until Wednesday when they will host the second of their six game homestand against the Vancouver Giants.
