Christina Longjohn has been elected to serve a second term as Chief at Sturgeon Lake First Nation.

As per Monday’s band election results, she received 447 votes. The sole challenger, Rachel Moosehunter, received 260 votes.

First elected in 2022, Longjohn was involved in the band’s cows and plows settlement, and was there to mark the completion of a major paving project.

She has also spoken publicly about a major archaeological find in the area, and denounced a planned clearcutting event in the nearby Island Forest.

In October, 2023, the community held a sod turning ceremony for a new birthing centre.

Also on Monday, five of the six incumbent councillors were re-elected and they are Mark Daniels, Fred Felix, Bernard Moosehunter, Anita Parenteau and Solomon Sanderson.

Austin Naytowhow will be the new face on council.

In total, 707 ballots were cast out of 2,236 eligible voters.

A pipe ceremony and swearing-in was held on April 2 at the Sturgeon Lake First Nation Band Hall.

Longjohn, who was first elected chief in 2023, said she is honoured to continue serving the Nation.

“I’m incredibly honoured to be chosen for a second term as Chief,” said Chief Longjohn. “This role means everything to me, and I take it on with humility, heart, and a deep love for our people. With the strength of our community behind us and the guidance of our Elders, I know we can continue building a strong and thriving Nation—together.”

Chief Longjohn also acknowledged the dedication of those who put their names forward in the election, and said their willingness to serve demonstrates the strength of the Nation’s leadership and community spirit.
