Well known for making moves on the race track, Prince Albert’s Shantel Kalika was showing off a different set of moves Saturday night and winning over the judges.

The CEO of Cornerstone Insurance and her partner Kim Schick were among the teams competing during the annual Swinging with the Stars event at the Exhibition Centre – a fundraiser for Hope’s Home. While acknowledging she had zero dance experience, Kalika told paNOW she had a great time.

“Both of us are business owners and we are determined women that are kind of paving the path forward for others watching and it’s been really good to just be part of the experience. I think for myself at the beginning, I was super nervous and I was like I can’t do it, but I always tell my staff, get comfortable with the uncomfortable so I said, okay, we’re gonna do it, let’s try it,” she said.

Hope’s Home is the first medically inclusive early learning and childcare centre in Canada and in Saskatchewan. Between the four centers in Regina, Saskatoon, Warman and Prince Albert, it helps assist over 500 youth who have complex medical and typical needs to learn, grow, and thrive. At the beginning of the night, over $94,000 had already been raised for the cause, and Kalika herself had entered the night with over $12,000

“You look around the room tonight and it’s literally filled with people from in our community. It’s absolutely amazing to be part of something like this and I’m just happy for all the amount of money that we’ve been able to raise and so a huge thank you to everybody who donated to our team and to Hope’s Home.”

Also among the celebrity dancers was Jacobo Flota who works as the Advice Center Manager at Affinity Credit Union for Candle Lake, Christopher Lake, Birch Hills, and Prince Albert.

“It was hard at the beginning because I didn’t know what it was going to be,” he confessed. “I learned lots and I feel I’m out of my shell you know, like what I’m comfortable with, so it’s a great experience, absolutely.”

Noting he has friends who work for Hope’s Home in Regina, and is a proud parent himself, Flota said he didn’t think twice about accepting the invitation to help the cause.

“I feel like it aligns with my personal values and so then I was like, yeah, absolutely I’ll do it. Let’s make it happen,” he said.

While this year’s final numbers are still calculated, last year’s event raised over $200,000. Hope’s Home CEO Lisa Wyatt explained they want to run a high-quality program and that means there’s additional funds that they don’t necessarily get from the government.

“So in order to be able to do what we do, we rely on the community support. So whether it’s you know helping us buy additional supplies for the kids, helping staff, and we have additional staff and what other facilities would need, so we make sure that we can make sure the kids have the best care possible.”

Noting that Swinging with the Stars is one of their biggest fundraisers of the year, Wyatt said the event helps to showcase the children they serve and the work that they do.

“It’s so much fun. I make sure I don’t come to rehearsal the night before, so it’s all kind of a shock and so I can live in it with just that everybody else and enjoy the night and have fun.”
