City updates funding model for Leisure Centre

The advent of a changed federal grant program, along with a revised timeline on donations, led city council to approve a changed funding model for the Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre.

Monday night, council approved a federal grant application that will see the city receive just over $12 million in funding over the next five years for the Leisure Centre.

“There is no capital project over the next five years that would qualify,” explained City Manager Sherry Person.

Because no other project is in the works that would meet the requirements of the Community Building Fund, it was a case of use it or lose it.

“If we don’t make application before March, we actually lose the allocation,” Person said.

Council voted in favour of that and asked questions about the donation campaign for the furnishings, such as seats, lockers and equipment.

So far, the city has secured a commitment from Lake Country Co-op that gives the business naming rights and puts $500,000 annually into the funding of the twin pool and aquatic centre.

Coun. Troy Parenteau (Ward 2) asked for an update on the work of DCG Philanthropic, the company hired to do the fundraising.

“It is going well. They have a number of proposals out,” Person said. “There will be announcements in the next coming months.”

Some of them could include additional naming rights for the ice pads and also for the pool.
