AAA, Jr. B: A weekend recap of hockey in P.A.

Oct 6, 2024 | 6:23 PM

It was a busy weekend on the ice for Prince Albert based hockey teams in the Jr. B and AAA ranks.

Timberjaks fall in Carrot River

In Jr. B, the Prince Albert Timberjaks dropped their lone contest on Saturday against the Outback Thunder in Carrot River.

After going down 4-0 in the first, rookie Brody Anderson got the Jaks on the board while on the man advantage just :33 seconds into the second period. The goal marked the third in as many games for the 16-year-old forward to start the season, as he sits in a three-way tie atop league scoring with seven points alongside teammate Cohen Noreikat, who also collected the primary assist on the play.

A little over two minutes later, Lukas Atkinson responded for the Thunder to re-establish the four goal lead, while Walker Chitwood added another later in the period to make it 6-1 entering the third.

Like the previous frame, the goals came early as Carrot River’s Jaylen Knelsen found twine to extend the lead even further.

Luckily, the bleeding wouldn’t get any worse as Kaden Petit sprung some life into Prince Albert, scoring just over a minute later.

Despite the goal, the defence on either end stood tall the rest of the way as the Thunder took it by a fistful, 7-2.

Timberjaks netminder Frank Chaboyer played the entire sixty minutes, stopping 39 shots in the loss as P.A. falls to 1-2-0 (W-L-OTL) on the young season.

P.A. is back at home for their next contest, getting set to host the reigning PJHL Champion Saskatoon Quakers. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Northern Regional Rec Centre in Buckland.

FINAL BOX SCORE

Mintos spilt weekend with Notre Dame

Both AAA teams picked up points during their weekend series.

For the Mintos, they finished their set with the Notre Dame Hounds with both a win and a loss at the Art Hauser Centre.

Game one on Saturday saw P.A. fall 4-2 to the Hounds after a pair of third period goals proved the difference maker. Still scoreless in the second period, Lincoln Rogers got the Mintos on the board first which was quickly followed by Evan Skoronski a few minutes later.

However, Notre Dame responded quick in the last three minutes of the period to tie it heading into the third. That’s when Jakob Boekelder scored the game-winner just 21 seconds in, which was later followed by a Noah Aldred empty net goal to seal the win.

Mintos goaltender Josh Henry managed 23 stops in the loss.

GAME ONE BOX SCORE

The goals came more often in game two which was a barnburner at the Hauser.

Entering the third period with the Hounds ahead 6-5, a Notre Dame charging penalty led to Luke Senick ripping home the equalizer midway through the frame.

With overtime looming in the final minutes of the contest, Connor Howe put home the game-winner to give P.A. the win and the weekend split against the Hounds.

Henry and Jayden Blanchette both combined for 21 saves for the win.

Following the weekend, the Mintos are now 2-2-0 (W-L-OTL) on the campaign.

The Mintos hit the road on Tuesday for a mid-week contest against the Saskatoon Blazers at the SaskTel Centre. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.

GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Northern Bears salvage single point in Weyburn

In two games down in Weyburn, the Mann-Northway Northern Bears managed to avoid the weekend sweep by salvaging a single point with an overtime loss against the Gold Wings.

In game one on Saturday, the goal light for Prince Albert stayed dark.

Weyburn netminder Tila Boyd turned aside all 42 shots the Northern Bears sent her way en route to a 3-0 win while her counterpart for P.A., Annika Neufeldt, made 25 saves in the loss.

Kiah Shields, Julia Durr, and Jade Olszewski were the goal scores in the victory for the Gold Wings.

GAME ONE BOX SCORE

In their second game, the light finally showed for the Northern Bears.

After going down 1-0 in the first, Elizabeth Udell got P.A.’s first of the weekend to tie it entering the third.

There, Marly Dumanski gave the Bears the lead with her first of the season with 6:25 to play. However, the Gold Wings offensive pressure became too much to handle as Kadence Dansereau tied it with :59 seconds remaining.

While the first overtime solved nothing, the second proved to decide a winner with less than two minutes to play in the period when Dansereau potted the game-winner, and her second of the game, to win it for Weyburn.

The Northern Bears are now 1-2-0-1 (W-L-OTW-OTL) on the year.

Following the loss, the Northern Bears have a few weeks before they are back in league action. Their next regular season contest is slated for Thursday, Oct. 24th against the Stars in Saskatoon. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. at Merlis Belsher Place.
