Prairie Dogs aim for history at Harvest Cup playoffs

The Prince Albert Prairie Dogs are looking to bring home some hardware from the 2024 Sask. Field Lacrosse League (SFLL) Harvest Cup playoffs in Moose Jaw this weekend.

The Dogs are in search of their second Harvest Cup following their first provincial title back when the championship was first introduced in 2021. Prior to that, the trophy was called the Citadel Cup and was awarded from 1985-95 and once more in 2007.

Looking to become the first team to win the Harvest Cup twice, head coach Matt Robin said the team is aiming high.

“We’re feeling pretty good. We finished the season 5-5, which put us into third place and we were happy how we started to play together near the end of the regular season.”

In the 2021 finals, Prince Albert narrowly claimed the championship with an 8-7 win over the Regina Southern Comfort. The other two SFLL Champions are Sturgis 9-1-1 (2022) and the Moose Jaw Tommy Guns (2023).

Set to play Sturgis and the Yorkton Olden Knights in their two round robin games Saturday, Robin said the game plan stays the same.

“We’ve played against them every year, there’s not [many] changes. It’s just a matter of who shows up and accomplishes what they set out to do. We’re hoping to take it quarter by quarter and game by game.

“Keep playing Prairie Dogs lacrosse,” he continued. “We’re all out here just playing the game that we all love. As seniors it’s, it’s always fun to keep playing lacrosse, even though sometimes we feel like we shouldn’t be playing.”

Opening faceoff for the Prairie Dogs’ first contest is set for 11:30 a.m. versus Yorkton with the second slated for later that evening at 5:30 against Sturgis. The first Harvest Cup playoff game is set for the following morning on Sunday at 10:00, with the opening faceoff for the Harvest Cup Finals scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

All games are played at Sunningdale Field in Moose Jaw.
