Carlton blanks St. Mary to claim annual Car Guys Classic

Sep 28, 2024 | 2:28 PM

Carlton proved dominant in their annual regular season meeting on the gridiron with St. Mary on Friday.

The two schools wrote another chapter in their storied rivalry as Carlton shut out St. Mary 48-0 to win the 12th annual Car Guys Classic.

The annual rivalry game, previously known as the Canadian Tire Classic, was played out of town in Birch Hills this year and marked Carlton’s third win of the season. Now still undefeated at 3-0, the win streak includes a 28-23 win over North Battleford in Week 1 and a 24-0 triumph against Martensville last week. The Crusaders will wrap up the regular season this Friday against the Barons in Lloydminster.

For St. Mary, the landslide loss signals the second loss of the campaign for the Marauders as they fell to 0-2. St. Mary got their regular season going last week where they dropped a 35-7 decision in North Battleford. Like Carlton, the Marauders are also on the road Friday and will head south to battle Martensville before closing out the regular season on Oct. 4 in Lloydminster.

Since the annual Classic began in 2012, St. Mary has won the annual contest six times (2012-17) while Carlton has claimed it four times (2018, 2022-24). The two schools tied in 2019, while COVID-19 sidelined the game in 2020 and 2021.

Max Clunie Field to open with ceremony in October

As the regular season nears its end in the North Sask. Football League (NSFL), the newly renovated Max Clunie Field in Prince Albert will see some action ahead of playoffs.

Although the work on Max Clunie Football Field is finished, renovations of the Harry Jerome Track are keeping players off the field until all work is completed. Work was originally slated to finish by Aug. 31, but weeks of heavy rain this past summer greatly delayed the track’s progress by roughly three weeks.

Work first began on the project at the end of the football season last year in mid-October with crews excavating the field and its irrigation systems.

With the renovations nearing an end, plans for the field’s opening are in place.

The first game on the new and improved Max Clunie Field is set for Oct. 10 when Carlton hosts Saskatoon’s Centennial Collegiate for a heavyweight exhibition tilt.
