Sep 23, 2024 | 5:12 AM

A 14-year-old girl from Flying Dust First Nation is dead after an ATV crashed when it hit a ditch while trying to evade police on Saturday.

Meadow Lake RCMP said in a news release that two people without helmets were spotted by an officer on the ATV in Meadow Lake around 4:15 a.m. on Sept. 21.

The ATV did not stop when emergency lights were activated by the officer and it took off at high speed on Highway 55 travelling towards Flying Dust First Nation, police said.

RCMP said the officer did not chase the ATV and turned off the emergency lights. The ATV was then seen turning south off the highway, where it hit the ditch.

The officer, who responded immediately, called paramedics but he girl was declared dead. RCMP said her family had been notified. The second person on the ATV had minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Meadow Lake RCMP said it is continuing to investigate with the assistance of the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.
