Aug 15, 2024 | 6:24 PM

OTTAWA — The Northern Super League team in the nation’s capital will be known as Ottawa Rapid FC.

The Canadian professional women’s soccer team revealed its name and logo Thursday at TD Place, where the club will also play home games during the league’s inaugural season.

The logo is a circular crest of different shades of blue, with a bird at the centre and Ottawa Rapid FC written along the bottom. The team says the bird is a peregrine falcon, which is native to Ottawa and renowned for its speed.

The NSL kicks off a 25-game season next April.

Ottawa is one of six founding cities, joining Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, Halifax and Calgary.

Halifax Tides FC and Calgary Wild FC are the two other teams that have announced their names and logos.

“We are here today to continue the push for gender equity in sport so that every kid growing up can be inspired by icons who look like them,” Ottawa Rapid FC CEO Tom Gilbert said in a statement. “When the opportunity came up to take on a role as the owner and operator of a club, with my deep personal connections in Ottawa, seeing the way that this city has rallied behind women’s sports, and knowing the incredible soccer community that exists here, I jumped at the opportunity to bring a team to this city.”
