Bail hearing planned for man accused of killing mother

Aug 8, 2024 | 2:00 PM

If granted release, a man accused of killing his mother will reside with a family member and wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.

Those conditions were mentioned Thursday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court when Everett Constant’s case was spoken to. His attendance was waived and his lawyer Garth Bendig was granted an adjournment to Sept. 5.

The bail hearing would take place at Court of King’s Bench and while no specific date has been set, Bendig mentioned his desire to have an application come forward in the next few weeks.

In the early afternoon hours of May 4, Prince Albert police attended to a residence in the Unit Block of 28th St. W. for a family dispute with violence.

Beverly Constant, Everett’s 51-year-old mother, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Everett was arrested soon after and has been in custody ever since.

In the days that followed, police confirmed Everett was first picked up on May 3 and taken to Victoria Hospital for a medical matter.

After being cleared medically, he was arrested and held overnight in PAPS cells and then released the following morning at 10a.m. and given a court appearance date for the end of the month on assault charges.

Sources have told paNOW this charge had to do with a hospital staff member.

About four hours later PAPS was called back to the East Hill residence for the violent family dispute. Police Chief Patrick Nogier previously confirmed the decision to release Constant from custody was based on several factors, including the offence that was committed (assault), what mechanisms were available to have him looked after, and his level of sobriety.

Sources close to the situation told paNOW, Constant had long struggled with mental health related issues and had been seeking out help with no success.

Nogier acknowledged the police service was aware of these concerns, adding their primary focus now was with the family and making sure the investigation includes the family with respect to updates and communication.

Multiple family members were in court this morning for the short hearing.
