Predators looking to close out PGLL Finals against Wolverines

The Prince Albert Predators are looking to put the cherry on top of what has been the club’s best season in history.

Saturday marks the final day of play in Prairie Gold Lacrosse League (PGLL) and the Predators are not only on the cusp of back-to-back titles, but also on the verge of perfection. P.A. finished the regular season with a 12-0 record and have since won two playoff games to push it to 14-0.

One of those contests was Game 1 of the best-of-three finals against the Swift Current Wolverines last weekend, which P.A. prevailed 10-7.

Head Coach Lucas Wells said he liked how his team performed.

“Overall, it was a good game. I thought we played well,” he said.

“We hadn’t played in about three weeks so we started out slower than we normally do, which I think was expected. We kind of weathered the first 20 minutes and then in the second period, we took the game over a little bit – outscoring them 3-0 in the second and then in the third, we got into some penalty trouble but that’s going to happen. Overall, it was a great team win and it was a great overall effort.”

With a win in Game 2, the Predators will have gone a perfect 15-0 on the year which would be the third time in the PGLL that a team has gone an entire regular season and playoffs without surrendering a loss.

The only other times it happened was during the Moose Jaw Mustangs first two seasons in the league as they went undefeated in back-to-back years to win their first two titles, which as the start of six straight championships.

Hoping to be a part of history on Saturday, Wells said it wouldn’t just mean a lot to the team, but also to the city and lacrosse in Prince Albert.

“Any time you’re able to put out a product and win, it shows the growth of the sport in the city and the interest that’s continuing to grow. This means a lot to the city and the P.A. lacrosse organization.”

He added that he expects Saturday to be nothing short of a hard-fought battle between either side.

Game 2 of the PGLL finals between the Predators and Wolverines goes at 7 p.m. at Kinsmen Arena. If Swift Current wins, a 10-minute Game 3 will happen immediately following Game 2 to decide a champion. Doors open at 6 p.m.
