Prince Albert Minor Softball Association’s first provincial title of 2024 went to the U17 Astros.

The team went undefeated on the weekend in Saskatoon and won the gold medal game against Treaty 4 by a score of 10-3. The U17 crew’s next stop will be at the Nationals in Quebec.

It was also a stellar weekend for the U13 Astros who won provincial gold in the championship game against the Rosebud Royals with a score of 18-9.

Head coach Brad Cassavant said the team is a group friends on and off the field and that makes for a special team dynamic.

“It just makes coming to the ball park and cheering each other on and winning so much easier because they love the game and they love each other,” he said. “For a few of the boys, this is their fourth provincial championship win a row.”

The team went 21 and 1 on the season and will play at the Westerns in Manitoba next month.

The U11 Astros A finished the weekend with a heartbreaking 8-7 loss to Parkland in the championship final to earn a silver medal. The B team finished with three losses and one win.

On the girls side, Prince Albert Aces U11 A North went undefeated in the round robin. They edged out two Saskatoon teams in the championship round and ended up in the gold medal game against another Saskatoon team. They ended up taking home a silver medal after a 10-5 loss in the final.

Meadow Lake hosted games for the U11 B Girls North. That Prince Albert Aces B team went 0-3 in round robin play.

The U13 C Aces teams didn’t make it past the round robin at their provincial tournament in Delisle. Team Gordon ended the weekend with three losses, while Team Boulet finished with one win and two losses.

There is plenty more softball taking place in the coming weeks. The U17 B Girls provincial championship takes place next weekend in Regina. So does the U13 Girls tournament. The U15 A Girls provincial draw is in Prince Albert the weekend of July 19 along with the U15 Open Boys provincial event. Both the Aces and Astros will have teams in play.

In the coming days, Prince Albert will host some of the best men’s softball teams in the world for the WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup Group B qualifier. Opening ceremonies take place Wednesday with Team Canada taking on Team Hong Kong in the marquee matchup that evening. You can find ticket sales and more information here.
