Three Sask. track athletes to represent Canada at 2024 Paris Games

Saskatchewan is sending three track and field athletes to the 2024 Paris Games next month.

Savannah Sutherland, who is from Borden, will wear the red and white at the Olympics this summer, along with Saskatoon’s Michelle Harrison and Anicka Newell. All three are hoping to bring an Olympic medal back to the Land of Living Skies this summer.

Sutherland will be appearing in her first Olympic Games for Canada. The 20-year-old is currently a student and runner at the University of Michigan. Just a few weeks ago, Sutherland set a new Canadian record in the 400-metre hurdles with a time of 53.26, finishing second in the NCAA championship.

This past season, Sutherland was named the Big 10 women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Year for the second straight season. She is set to compete in the 400-metre hurdles event along with the 4×400-metres.

Harrison is also making her Olympic debut for Canada this summer. She will compete in the 100-metre hurdles event in Paris. The 31-year-old previously attended the University of Saskatchewan and helped the Huskies win three national championships.

Newell is the most experienced Saskatchewan track athlete attending the Olympics next month. She will be representing Canada at the Games for the third time in her career. She mostly grew up in the United States, but calls Saskatoon her home away from home, especially because her grandmother lives in the Bridge City. Newell will represent Canada in the women’s pole vault.

The athletics events at the Paris Games begin on August 1.
