An incident at Prince Albert’s Gateway Mall that was described in court as a case of an attempted kidnapping or case of child luring, has resulted in a 15-month jail sentence.

Dawn Genereaux, 41, appeared by video on Monday when her case was discussed at Provincial Court. She entered a number of guilty pleas related to assault and threats.

An agreed statement of facts was read by Crown Prosecutor Gail Douglas, who explained that on the afternoon on May 5, two young girls ages 12 and 13, were waiting to be picked up by a family member.

Out of nowhere, a strange woman appeared and after blocking the girls’ path to the exit to the southwest parking lot, proceeded to grab them by the wrists and attempted to walk away. The girls later told police the woman had told them to keep walking and warned them that if they went outside, someone was going to shoot them.

Meanwhile, waiting outside in a vehicle were the girls family members who observed what was occurring and quickly intervened, yelling at Genereaux to stay away from the kids.

“She seen fear in both their eyes,” Douglas explained, referring to the concerned grandmother.

Genereaux complied and walked away.

While on the phone with police, the family members then followed Genereaux to an address on sixth St. E. where she and another man were observed breaking into a residence.

When officers arrived, Genereaux was found sitting on a couch and was poking herself with a needle. She told the officers the needle was filled with Javex (bleach) and she was trying to kill herself.

Soon after, Genereaux jumped to her feet and lunged at the officers. She was tazed twice before being arrested. The needle was tossed behind the couch.

As the facts of the case were read, Genereaux was observed wiping tears from her eyes, and when given the opportunity to speak, apologized to everyone involved and promised to get off drugs and get help.

Her lawyer Deb Hokins explained Genereaux, who has four children of her own, had been struggling with a lot of grief and using crystal meth.

Affer she’s released from custody, she will be on probation for a period of 12 months, and among the conditions is living at a residence at Fort Qu’ Appelle. She must also complete 20 hours of community service.
