Victory on the fairways

Klughart wins fourth Waskesiu Men’s Lobstick title

The winner of the 2024 Waskesiu Men’s Lobstick is happy to get a large monkey off his back.

Danny Klughart last won the match play tournament in 2019 and noted since then it’s been a running joke he needed one more to tie Martin Ring’s tournament won record of four.

“It feels pretty good not to handle those comments any more,” he said.

Prior to 2019, Klughart also won in 2013 and 2017.

This year’s nearly week long tournament opened last Monday with a qualifier and in some very wet and less than ideal conditions, Klughart shot a 73. Happy with the score, he explained he’s putting in a lot of extra practice time.

“Just some short game stuff and a lot of controlling the trajectory spin on my wedges,” he explained.

Klughart would go on to shoot a 67 in his opening match and never looked back, ploughing through the competition. He said he was focused on fairways and greens and just being aggressive.

“I didn’t give them a lot of hope. I only made three bogeys in five matches,” he said.

The final match of the 2024 Fountain Tire Men’s Lobstick pitted Klughart against Saskatoon’s Payton Ochitwa. Klughart was declared the winner after 16 holes.

Prince Albert’s Martin Ring also competed and after losing his first match, would go on to win the Championship Flight Consolation.
