Team Lakeland sees success at senior provincial games

The Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association (SSFA) Provincial 55+ Games wrapped up in the Battlefords with a number of local athletes coming home with hardware.

Competitions took place in a number of sports and games including eight-ball, cribbage, five-pin bowling, curling, Kaiser, pickleball, poetry and short story writing, lawn bowling, slo-pitch, swimming, track and field and photography.

Brother and sister duo from Team Lakeland, Bill Cathcart and Katherin Borysiuk each came home with four gold medals in their track and field events.

Cathcart took first place in the 50-metre and 100-metre sprints, long jump and triple jump. While Borysiuk took to the track for gold medal performances in the 50, 100, 200 and 400-metre sprints. Both qualified to represent Saskatchewan in the 2024 Canada 55+ Games to be held this August in Quebec.

Other medalists from Team Lakeland included Janna Anderson who took silver in the 50- metre freestyle swimming competition, gold in the 50-metre backstroke and gold in the 100-metre breaststroke. Scott Parker took gold for the 50-metre freestyle, 50-metre breaststroke and 100-metre individual medley in the 55+ Men category.

Gillian Gracie took first place in shot put and discus in the 80+ Women category. Dale Lawrence won gold in the 65+ Men category for discus and long jump.

James Gilbert had the second best men’s gross score in the 55+ category for golf. On the women’s side, Susan Snell took gold in the women 60+ category, Jodi Bruce got bronze. In the 65+ age group, Dianna Sutton of Team Lakeland took home gold. Sandra MacDonald did the same on the 70+ side while Delphine Soulier got silver. For women 75+, Arlene Segin had the best score. Andrew Snell took silver for men’s net score in the 60+ age group. Joyce Schaefer received gold for Women 70+ Callaway score. Team Lakeland’s Michele Hatley took silver and Lorna Gilbert took bronze for women’s net score in the 60+ age group. Debra Theirman received gold for women 70+ in that category.

In pickleball competitions, teams from Lakeland took home 3 gold medals, 1 silver and 3 bronze. Results can be found here.

On the event’s website, President of the Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association, Margaret Gailing said, “These games not only support and promote healthy lifestyles, but also provide a framework that focuses on social, physical and intellectual opportunities regardless of age or ability, whether a participant or volunteer.”
