It’s spring and that means it’s time to clean up

Prince Albert’s annual spring clean up is well underway, with volunteers making the community much neater and much tidier all week.

This year, the First Nation Cadet Corps from Prince Albert and Sturgeon Lake lead by Rick Sanderson joined city councillor Tony Head and cleaned up the riverbank.

“Yesterday I got the privilege to work with the First Nations Cadets Corps, and we did some cleanup along the riverbank, picking up garbage and needles along the way,” Head explained.

The youth do not pick up the needles. They mark them with flags and the adults trained to gather them safely pick them up and dispose of them.

Other people doing cleanup and seeing discarded needles can call Access Place and they will also come and get them.

About 30 cadets and staff cleaned up along the shore from 9 Ave. W to 5 Ave. West.

The Prince Albert Downtown Improvement District (PADBID) has rescheduled its clean up because of the rain and cold on Tuesday, the day it was to happen.

It will now start at 9 am on June 11 and go until 11:30 with the group meeting at Memorial Square to start. Again, Access Place will take part and pick up any needles laying around.

Rhonda Trusty, PADBID manager, welcomes the annual cleanup.

“Having a clean space improves a person’s mental and emotional health, it provides a pleasant shopping experience and it indicates that people value and appreciate an orderly and tidy space. It is an opportunity for people to have pride in their surroundings,” she said.

She is encouraging business owners to clean up the exteriors of their buildings by wasing windows, picking up garbage and sweeping the sidewalk.

The official cleanup wraps up on Saturday. People wanting to dispose of waste can do so at one of three sites designated by the city.

Bins have been placed at the Kinsmen Water Park Parking Lot – 1st Ave West and 28th Street, the corner of 6th Avenue East and 10 Street East and at St. Michael Parish – 1505 13 Street West. They will remain there until Saturday at 5:00 pm.
