A doubles pairing from St. Mary High School is set to compete at the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association Badminton Championships in Nipawin this weekend.

Partners Greyson de Padua and Zayan Doctor will compete against the province’s best on May 11 after qualifying at regionals.

“It was pretty hard (at regionals), most of the kids were older than us,” said de Padua, a Grade 10 student. “Our coaches helped us through each game…we made them proud.”

“I’m very excited (for provincials). I know most of the kids…we’re going to have a good time there, it’ll be a great experience for us,” he said.

de Padua added that going up against the top teams in the province will be a tough test.

“We hope to do good, but there’s some pretty strong teams there,” said de Padua, who is coached by his dad Tony. “So we’ll try our best and hopefully get on the podium.”

Meanwhile, Doctor moved to Canada from India about a year ago. He said doubles is all about teamwork.

“In doubles it’s like if you lose it’s because of both of us and if we win it’s because of both of us too,” said Doctor, who is in Grade 9. “So it’s no one’s fault or no one’s more hard work in a game. And good chemistry too.”

The pairing have been playing together since December. And as a young up-and-coming team, Doctor is already looking forward to next year.

“I’m very excited (for provincials)…I know there are some hard teams to play with but it will be a good experience,” he said. “And maybe next year we can win provincials or get ranked second or first maybe.”

St. Mary Grade 12 student Jackson Lepage is also competing at provincials (in boys singles). The event will take place at L.P. Miller Comprehensive School.
