Man accused of murder in Montreal Lake pleads not guilty

Apr 9, 2024 | 1:00 PM

A man accused of second-degree murder will stand trial later this year.

The man accused of killing 41-year-old Kevin Stewart in Montreal Lake last November has entered not guilty pleas and opted to be tried by judge and jury.

Walker Smith, age 29, did not appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court in person on April 9 but had his lawyer set dates for a preliminary inquiry from Dec. 10 to 12 in Montreal Lake.

Opting for a jury trial means that Smith will be tried in Court of King’s Bench.

Smith was arrested at a home in Montreal Lake after RCMP were called to a home in Montreal Lake at around 3:15 am on Nov. 12.

They found Stewart injured and he was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics.

In addition to one charge of second-degree murder, Smith is also charged with uttering threats.
