Gathering Together

Candlelight Vigil held in memory of murdered Melfort woman

Mar 21, 2024 | 3:26 PM

A group of people came together Wednesday evening to remember the life of Danielle Dobersheck who was murdered in Melfort on March 10.

Those who worked with her or her children, those who were friends with her, those who taught her, and those who were just suffering after her loss, gathered at Memorial Gardens and hosted a Candlelight Vigil in her honour.

A minute of silence was held in honour of Dobersheck (Ben Tompkins/northeastNOW)

“We had a terrible tragedy happen in our community and there is just a group of people who didn’t really know where to put their feelings, so we just decided that we would put together an opportunity for the community and anyone who wanted to gather in a safe space and just reflect and remember,” said Lori Constant, who helped organize the vigil.

“We also wanted to think about what we want our community to look like in the future and what we want for all the members of our community and remember that we all have a voice and we all have ways that we can impact change, so it was just an opportunity to connect in that way as well.”

Dobersheck’s long-time partner is the one accused with her death and is facing a charge of second-degree murder.

According to Statistics Canada, Saskatchewan continues to record the highest rates of intimate partner and family violence among Canadian provinces.

Constant, although she doesn’t know the exact way to fix that, knows that something has to be done.

“We know that we need to work together, and we do have that happening in our community and that’s great. We need to use our voices and make action happen. It was really great to see people come out and be together, and I hope that everyone who was there felt supported and safe. Maybe also a little bit of realization that we all can make a difference,” she told northeastNOW.
