Sturgeon Lake teen lands role in hit Netflix series

Meadow Kingfisher says she had no idea what she was auditioning for, until after she landed the part.

The 13-year-old, from Sturgeon Lake First Nation, plays young Katara in the hit Netflix Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender.

“My little brother is like a really big fan of Avatar, so he was like in shock that I got a part in it,” she said.

Kingfisher, who is no stranger to the small screen, described this role as possibly her most challenging yet, describing how she has be mischievous and laughing in one scene, or showing fear and crying when the Fire Nation kills her mother.

“I used to not like watching myself act and stuff but I was just really proud of myself for this one and I felt like I did a pretty good job,” she said.

The series, which is filmed in Vancouver, is currently number one on Netflix and Kingfisher acknowledged her friends have been very supportive, constantly tagging her on social media when they see her on screen.

Meadow’s foray into acting essentially started during the pandemic, which forced the sudden stoppage of her dance classes.

Her family saw a callout on social media looking for Indigenous dancers and artists for a project in Alberta, and not soon after she landed her first acting job. Since then the demand for acting jobs has increased and Meadow has found herself travelling to many different filming locations. When asked what she likes most about her latest project, she said the other senior actors have been very supportive.

“[They] were just such a big inspiration for me and it was just like really good and amazing,” she said.

Balancing her busy acting career with school has not been easy, and so Meadow is currently home schooling. And she still finds time to dance up to 20 hours a week.

Going forward, she aspires to one day land a role with Disney so she can dance and act.

As it turns out, Meadow is not the only Saskatchewan born actor on the show. Joel Montgrand, who plays Katara’s father, is from La Ronge and graduated high school in Prince Albert. He’s currently living in Vancouver.
