An actor from the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation is set to star in one of, if not the most, anticipated shows of 2024.

The first season of the live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender will be available on Netflix starting Thursday.

Joel Montgrand, who was raised in La Ronge, graduated high school in Prince Albert, and currently lives in Vancouver, is set to play the role of Hakoda, the father of two of the main characters Katara and Sokka.

He told paNOW a big reason he got the role was because of the actor playing Katara. Montgrand and Kiawentiio Tarbell previously played father and daughter in the 2020 film Beans.

“They liked our chemistry, our dynamic, so they said, ‘The hard work is done, the bonding is already over,’” Montgrand explained.

Rainbow Dickerson, who played Kiawentiio’s mother in Beans has also been cast as Katara and Sokka’s mom Kya.

Montgrand had only seen a few episodes of the popular animated series before getting the audition. However, that changed rather quickly.

“When I got the audition, I binged it all and thought it was fantastic, an amazing cartoon,” he said.

Those who also watched the show would know that Hakoda only briefly appears in the first season. He becomes a more prominent character in the next two seasons.

While he couldn’t share details, Montgrand explained some appearances from certain characters were changed slightly as the first season will have eight hour-long episodes instead of 20 smaller episodes.

“They’ve used that to cut away some of the throwaway filler episodes to give the emotional scenes more impact. All the important stuff is still there, we’re still following the story of the cartoon. No one’s gonna be surprised,” said Montgrand.

He added he’s excited to get more screen time if the show gets picked up for the second and third seasons.

“I had to get in shape when I was doing True Detective and I’ve since kind of just relaxed and now I’m gonna have to go back to the gym,” Montgrand joked.

He also explained that he’s already seen the first episode and believes fans will be in for a treat, especially those disappointed with the live-action movie that came out in 2010.

“I think fans are getting the justice they deserve.”
