Mintos, Legionnaires game two postponed due to weather following P.A.’s game one win

UPDATE: Game Two has been rescheduled for Monday at 7 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.

The Prince Albert Mintos and Swift Current Legionnaires will have to wait an extra day before the two clubs can get their hands on one another again.

The Sask. Male AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL) has announced that Sunday’s game two of the best-of-five first-round playoff series will be postponed due to a major snowstorm rolling through Central Saskatchewan, prompting ‘travel not recommended’ warnings from Highway Hotline on roads across the province.

The game was previously scheduled to be played in Prince Albert at the Art Hauser Centre with a 7:00 p.m. puck drop. Regarding the postponement, the league has stated that “more information will follow once the game has been rescheduled.”

The game change comes after the Mintos prevailed in game one on Saturday at Swift Current’s InnovationPlex, toppling the Legionnaires 4-3 to take a 1-0 series lead.

After going down 2-0 entering the second period, P.A. caught fire and scored three times in the frame with two markers from Owen Nelson along with Carter Cole’s first career playoff goal at the U18AAA level to head into the third up by one.

There, Kade Stringer potted the equalizer for the Legionnaires while on the powerplay before Nelson completed the hat trick a short time later to put the Mintos back on top, 4-3.

Swift Current would pull their netminder Berney Weston late in the game and despite having over two full minutes with the extra man, the Mintos defence stood tall and stopped the Legionnaires’ offence to hang on for the game-one win on the road.

Weston was credited with the loss and made 31 saves for Swift Current while Brady Holtvogt turned aside 29 shots to help P.A. prevail in the series opener.

At the time of this article’s publication, game two had not yet been rescheduled and the next game in the series is slated for Tuesday night at the InnovationPlex in Swift Current. Puck drop is set for 7:45.
