Northern Bears score six unanswered to down Wildcats

Feb 18, 2024 | 6:19 PM

The Mann-Northway Northern Bears managed to get their revenge against the Swift Current Wildcats on Sunday afternoon.

The Bears avenged themselves with a 6-2 victory at the Art Hauser Centre following a 4-2 loss to Swift Current just one day ago. The win is crucial for P.A. as they continue their push for the playoffs where they now sit one game ahead of the last place Weyburn Gold Wings in the standings with five games remaining in the regular season.

Sunday’s game began in favour of the Wildcats when they got out to a 2-0 lead after the first period with goals from Cydny Price and Kyla Benjamin.

It didn’t stay that way for long into the second though as Kinley Brassard cashed in for the Bears while on the powerplay 1:14 into the frame. That got the ball rolling for the Bears as later in the period, captain Julia Cey managed to capitalize on an offensive turnover by Swift Current and scored with under five minutes to go to tie the game.

Then just over a minute later, Elizabeth Udell scored the Northern Bears’ second powerplay goal of the afternoon to give P.A. their first lead of the game. The Bears weren’t done yet in the period as 30 seconds later, Marly Dumanski potted Prince Albert’s fourth of frame from in tight to make it 4-2 heading into the third.

The Black and Orange stayed on the gas in the final 20 minutes as Cey added a pair of markers in the period to complete the hat-trick and down the Wildcats by a dominating 6-2 score.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

Leading the assist department for the Northern Bears was Mikiya Anderson who had three, behind her was Tristyn Endicott who tallied two, and following them was Brassard and Zayda Summach who both had one.

In net for P.A. collecting the win was Nikita Krayetski who made 27 saves to help the Bears improve to 5-15-2-3 on the campaign.

Opposite her for Swift Current was Paige Fischer who also turned aside 27 shots, but was handed the loss as the Wildcats fall to 8-15-2-3 on the year.

The Bears are back at it next weekend when they welcome the Notre Dame Hounds for a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday at the Art Hauser Centre. Puck drop for either game is slated for 1:00 p.m.
