Mintos snap three-game skid with win over Contacts

Feb 16, 2024 | 11:38 AM

The Prince Albert Mintos got back into the win column on Thursday night, defeating the Saskatoon Contacts 2-1 at the Art Hauser Centre.

The win halted a three-game losing streak for the club, which included a pair of defeats against the Tisdale Trojans last weekend as well as a shutout loss to the Contacts back on Feb. 8.

The win also wrapped up the season series between Saskatoon and P.A. where they split the four games at two apiece.

The Contacts were the first to strike on Thursday, scoring just over five minutes into the opening frame courtesy of Rylan Hue’s 12th of the season.

It remained that way until the 6:09 mark of the second when the Mintos finally broke the ice. Jordon Abrametz connected with Taite Donkin who put home the puck and pulled the game to even entering the third.

There, the Mintos pulled ahead with 8:26 left on the clock thanks to their leading scorer. The newest member of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Owen Nelson, potted the go-ahead marker to give P.A. their first lead of the game.

Thankfully, the Contacts could not get anything going with the clock ticking down as the Mintos hung on for the narrow 2-1 win.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

Also finding the scoresheet for Saskatoon was Samuel Wardell and Kanye Huang while for Prince Albert, Abrametz and Donkin managed to collect the assists on Nelson’s sixth game-winning goal of the year.

Between the pipes for the Green and Gold was Brady Holtvogt who needed 16 saves to collect the win and help the Mintos improve to 22-13-5 on the campaign.

Logan Edmonstone was in goal for the visitors and tallied 33 saves, earning the game’s ‘Away Star’ as the Contacts fall to 17-21-4 on the year.

As playoffs near, P.A. has just four games remaining in the regular season and continues to whittle down the schedule this weekend. The Mintos are set to play in a home-and-home against the Warman Wildcats and begin the set on Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre with a 1:30 p.m. puck drop. Game two is slated for Monday afternoon at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex for a 2:15 start.
