Mintos & Northern Bears fall to Saskatoon opponents

Feb 9, 2024 | 12:09 PM

Prince Albert’s U18AAA hockey teams came up on the short end of their contests against their respective Saskatoon rivals on Thursday night.

The Prince Albert Mintos faced off with the Contacts in Saskatoon and were blanked by the home team 2-0, while the Mann-Northway Northern Bears fell to the Stars 7-1 at the Art Hauser Centre.

The loss for the Mintos snaps a streak of back-to-back wins as they downed the Notre Dame Hounds 5-4 in overtime on Feb. 1 and doubled up the Yorkton Maulers 6-3 exactly one week ago.

The two goal scorers for the Contacts were Rhett Ewen and Owen Chapman as the two also tacked on an assist on each others goal. Additionally, Jace Rask and Nigel Boehm found the scoresheet via assists as well.

In goal for the Mintos was Brady Holtvogt who made 33 saves as P.A. falls to a 21-12-4 record on the campaign.

Opposite him was Logan Edmonstone who stopped all 41 shots he faced to help the Contacts improve to 15-20-4 on the year.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (Mintos)

Their sister club, the Northern Bears, didn’t fare any better in their game either.

Entering the third period down 4-0, Tristyn Endicott was able to break the goose egg and get P.A. on the board while on the powerplay. However, the three-goal deficit was as close as the Bears would get to as Saskatoon added three more markers in the final frame to bury the game and secure the win, 7-1.

Also finding the scoresheet for the Black and Orange were Mikiya Anderson and Elizabeth Udell who each tallied an assist on Endicott’s lone tally.

Halle Duchene led the point department for the Stars, netting five points including a hat-trick and a pair of assists in the game. Avery Bairos was second in scoring with a goal and two assists and behind her was Peyton Gabruck who collected two helpers. Meanwhile, Ireland Stein, Madison Buziak, and Kolbee Ashe scored the other markers and Haley Braun and Brielle Minish rounded out the scoring with one assist each.

Nikita Krayetski was between the pipes for the Bears and managed 44 saves as Prince Albert fell to 2-14-2-3 on the campaign.

Collecting the win in net for Saskatoon was Ava Drabyk who made 15 stops to help the Stars improve to 15-2-3-1.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (Northern Bears)

The Mintos are back in action Saturday night as they head to Tisdale to face the Trojans while the Northern Bears get set to welcome the Weyburn Gold Wings to the Art Hauser Centre for a Saturday matinee.
