Food cart donations put exclamation mark on Give a Little Life Day

Better patient care is coming to Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert after a generous donation from a local philanthropist.

Malcolm Jenkins has donated $44,000 to the hospital which has been used to purchase two new Multigen food service delivery systems.

Jenkins said he has a deep personal connection to the hospital and that he wanted to give back.

“Prince Albert deserves it, this is a great hospital,” said Jenkins. “My wife passed away in 2010 and she was in palliative care two or three times and the experience we had at the hospital was amazing. It was just the best of the best and this is just my small way of paying back a little bit for how they helped her.”

Jenkins said his wife was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2003 and was initially given only one year to live.

“We made seven and a half years, and the care that she got at the Victoria Hospital was a part of making that happen, and I’m very grateful for that,” said Jenkins, whose niece also gave birth at Victoria Hospital.

The donation was part of Give a Little Life Day, which brought in $481,742.44 for the hospital back in December.

The new food carts were already in use as of Thursday afternoon. Each cart can carry anywhere from 300-500 meals a day.

“It keeps the food fresher, keeps it hotter, and just helps us deliver a better quality product to our patients,” said Matt Sawatzky, the nutrition and food service manager at the hospital.

Meanwhile, CEO for the Boreal Healthcare Foundation Cody Barnett said the new equipment benefits both patients and staff.

“It’s a pretty remarkable impact when you think about how many patients this actually touches,” Barnett said. “Our staff do an incredible job in the hospital, all of our healthcare workers, and for them to do that job they need these kinds of pieces of equipment to be able to do it well.”
