P.A. man attacked by dog, uses pocketknife to survive

A Prince Albert man is recovering after being attacked by a dog.

Ron Bodnarchuk told paNOW his 19-year-old grandson Ethan, who didn’t feel comfortable discussing the incident, was nearly killed on Wednesday after leaving a restaurant on 2nd Avenue W.

Just before getting into his vehicle, he was bitten and dragged away by a dog. While he couldn’t tell exactly what breed it was, Ethan believed it was most likely a pit bull.

“It tried to bite him around the face, so he threw his elbow and arm around his throat and face,” said Bodnarchuk.

Ethan was bitten on the top of his head; however, he was able to protect his face and neck.

He ended up pulling out his pocketknife, which he recently received as a gift from his grandparents, and started fighting back.

“He stabbed the dog, but the dog kept biting and going after him, so he stabbed it in the neck and killed it by cutting its throat,” said Bodnarchuk.

Overall, Ethan sustained cuts to his elbow and head. He’s since been to multiple walk-in doctors but was just told he didn’t need a tetanus shot.

However, Bodnarchuk explained they still want to get the dog tested.

“Otherwise, he’s got to go through a very painful rabies vaccination.”

Right now, they don’t know where the dog is. They’ve contacted P.A. police and are in the process of reaching out to the City of Prince Albert. Bodnarchuk thinks there’s a chance the dog’s owner picked it up, but they can’t tell for sure if it was a stray or not because it didn’t have a collar.

Meanwhile, Bodnarchuk believes this incident proves that dogs, no matter what breed, should always be on a leash when in public.

He thinks this situation could have been much worse.

“What if he didn’t have a knife or what if it was a kid that walked past there or an elderly couple, that dog probably would have killed them,” he said.

In his opinion, fines should be increased and doubled for repeat offenders.
