Man injured after shooting on Pelican Narrows, PBCN urging province to help launch safety plan

Nov 30, 2023 | 2:58 PM

The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) is calling on the provincial government to help jumpstart its community safety plan following a recent shooting in Pelican Narrows.

On Wednesday, RCMP found an injured man in the community suffering from serious injuries. It’s reported that several people approached a home in the community and discharged a firearm, injuring the victim.

Police don’t believe this was a random act. They continue to look for the suspects with anyone with information asked to contact them or Crime Stoppers.

The PBCN has been under a state of emergency for over a month due to the ongoing crime in communities like Pelican Narrows.

Leadership also had a meeting with representatives from the provincial government on Nov. 8 about how to best address the issue. They also discussed potential funding which they say is needed even more following the shooting.

“Our engagement with government representatives was constructive, but recent incidents have made the need for quick implementation all the more critical,” said Chief Karen Bird. “We find ourselves in an ongoing state of emergency and our community’s safety hangs in the balance.”

According to the First Nation, they haven’t heard back from the province she the two sides met.
