Nov 29, 2023 | 4:00 PM

Pickleballers of all ages will be at the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse this weekend as the Prince Albert Pickleball Club hosts its first official tournament.

The event will feature two different skill levels for participants to play in, beginner/intermediate and intermediate/advanced. There will also be separate games at either level for men’s and women’s contests.

One of the organizers of the event, Devin Gorder said that the club expecting quite the crowd for this weekend’s tournament.

“We got 60 people that are registered in different categories,” he said. “We have men, women, and a couple of junior players playing as well. Players are coming from Regina, Saskatoon, some smaller rural towns and then there’s Prince Albert who’s heavily involved just from the club here.”

Gorder highlighted the club has hosted smaller tournaments before, averaging 12-16 players in a round-robin style of play but they have never hosted an event of this size before. The tournament style of event is new to the club, something they hope to make annual in the coming years.

“There’s a pretty good tournament season that goes on which usually seems to go in the summertime,” he explained. “There’s usually a few winter tournaments so we like to have one here because it’s a little more of a competitive event and not rec play. Tournament play is different, it’s just that little bit more of a competitive edge. It’s nice to see people come out and give that aspect of the game a try and to have some fun.”

The tournament will begin at 8:30 on Saturday morning with beginner/intermediate play which will wrap up at 12:30 p.m. The intermediate/advanced tournament will begin at 10:30 that same morning and end at 4:30 p.m.
