P.A. non-profit receives generous grant to help seniors

A non-profit group in Prince Albert said a recent grant will go a long way towards helping its residents.

Earlier this month, Abbeyfield Houses Society of Prince Albert was named a recipient of a $5,000 grant from Affinity Credit Union.

According to Board Member Kevin Mugford, the funds will go towards a project to help install tub inserts with swinging doors, instead of stepping over into a tub.

“This grant is going to allow us to complete that support for seven of the 11 suites,” he said. “Eventually we’re going to work towards completing our 11.”

The East Hill home provides independent living accommodations for seniors and welcomed its first residents in 2001.

“We’re honoured to fund Abbeyfield House because their values align with ours at Affinity in enhancing financial and social inclusion for communities facing barriers,” the company said in a statement. “The supportive housing Abbeyfield House offers to independent seniors makes them an essential part of the community and we’re thrilled our North West Member Council contributed to the great work they do.”

Mugford said Abbeyfield is in the business of supporting people and that having showers is necessary for many, and the grant will mean a lot for residents.

“It’s a $5,000 grant, not a $100,000 grant as such, but yet it’s going to have a daily impact on the residents we support in terms of their independence, they’re feeling that they’re caring for themselves.”

It’s expected the project will be completed early in 2024.

“It will have an almost daily positive impact on our residents,” added Mugford. “So, we’re obviously extremely appreciative of Affinity (for) helping us work towards completing this project.”
