A man charged after a tense situation at James Smith Cree Nation, that forced a local school to enact its hold and secure protocols, has received a four-month jail sentence and a 10-year firearms prohibition.

Kalen Felix was at Melfort Provincial Court on Friday, and guilty pleas were entered to possession of property obtained by crime, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The incident occurred on the morning of Sept. 22. Melfort RCMP received a report of armed individuals at JSCN.

The community’s security personnel observed a vehicle with two occupants, and they claimed a firearm was visible inside the vehicle. Officers immediately responded and soon found the suspect vehicle. A firearm was located and seized.

The investigation also determined the vehicle had been reported stolen to Prince Albert RCMP on Aug. 31.

Felix, who was 18 at the time of his arrest, was initially facing a total of seven charges, however the remaining two gun-related charges were stayed by the Crown, and three counts of failure to comply with a probation order were previously withdrawn.

Also charged in the case is Destiny Constant who is currently on bench warrant status.
