Cougars lock down Raiders for shut out victory

Nov 4, 2023 | 10:11 PM

The Prince George Cougars came into the Art Hauser Centre on Saturday night and took care of business, blanking the Prince Albert Raiders 5-0 behind some stellar goaltending.

Cougars’ rookie netminder Joshua Ravensbergen stopped all 38 shots he faced for the win, as Prince George remains on top of the Western Hockey League with a 12-5-0-0 record.

Koehn Ziemmer led the scoresheet with a goal and two assists while Nicholas McLennan, Zac Funk, Terik Parascak, and Oren Shtrom also scored in the game. Ephram McNutt had two helpers and Bauer Dumanski, Ondrej Becher, and Riley Heidt each had one.

In goal for the Raiders was Chase Coward who made 19 saves as Prince Albert falls to 9-8-1-0 on the campaign.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

The Cougars got the games opening goal early in the first period when McNutt connected with McLennan for his first of the season.

Later in the frame, Keaton Dowhaniuk delivered a dangerous hit to a vulnerable Sloan Stanick into the boards which prompted a response from the other Raiders on the ice, leading to Harrison Lodewyk and Dowhaniuk dropping the gloves. As a result, the Cougars defenceman received a five-minute major for fighting, a five-minute major for checking to the head, and a game misconduct. Lodewyk was also given a fighting major along with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty while Stanick would stay in the game.

In the second, more goals were scored however all at the hands of the Cougars. Funk and Parascak both scored less than 20 seconds apart to triple the Prince George lead heading into the final period.

The Cougars would go onto light the lamp twice more in the third, escaping Hockeytown North with a 5-0 win.

The Raiders now get set to embark on their longest road trip of the season for the next couple of weeks. On Wednesday night, the Green and Gold kickoff a seven game roadie in Lethbridge against the Hurricanes before continuing south for Prince Albert’s U.S. Division swing. The Raiders are back at the Art Hauser Centre on Nov. 25 when they host the Moose Jaw Warriors. The night will also be a special one as Dan Hodgson’s number 16 will be retired by the club, joining Dave Manson’s number 4 and Mike Modano’s number 9.
