Prince Albert man with repeated flights from police, receives 37 month sentence

A Prince Albert man who was released on bail, didn’t show up for his scheduled trial, and was then re-arrested 11 days later after driving a stolen SUV, is now serving a three-year prison sentence.

Germaine Michel, 31, appeared in court on Wednesday and entered guilty pleas to charges that included a number of driving-related offences, as well as possession of a weapon (baton) and possession of a stolen vehicle.

With credit for time spent in remand custody, Michel has 853 days left to serve. Upon his release, he will also be subject to a three-year driving ban.

The most substantive of his matters happened on Oct. 23, when Michel was on bench warrant status.

According to a statement from the city’s police service, just prior to 4 p.m., members of the Criminal Investigation Division saw a stolen SUV in an alley in the 1500 Block of McIntosh Drive.

Earlier that day, officers attempted to stop the SUV but the driver disregarded police and actively tried to evade apprehension.

Once police again found the stolen SUV, it was contained by two unmarked police vehicles. Investigators identified themselves as officers to the driver and advised him he was under arrest.

Michel then attempted to flee and drove into the police vehicles, causing damage. Marked patrol units arrived on the scene and assisted with the arrest. During the incident a window was broken on the stolen SUV and pepper spray was deployed to gain control of the suspect.

All of Michel’s charges dated back to January and also involved a flight from police to which a guilty plea was entered.

Also among the charges stayed by the Crown was an alleged vehicle theft from March 15., as well as multiple charges relating to assaulting police officers which stemmed from the flight incidents.
