Mann-Northway Northern Bears gaining confidence after first win

The Mann-Northway Northern Bears girl’s hockey team have found their way into the win column.

The Northern Bears picked up their first win of the season Wednesday after defeating the Battlefords Sharks, 7-5. The team is now 1-3-0-1 on the season.

“It was a game that was important for us, especially after the weekend in Regina (two losses), we wanted to start out strong and I thought we did that,” said Northern Bears Head Coach Scott Young. “We didn’t play a constant game but I thought out of all the games we’ve played this year, I thought it was one of our stronger games.”

“There was some celebration…obviously it was our first win and we needed that. In some of the other games we’ve played well and could have got some wins, but hockey goes that way, you don’t get them. The girls were excited to have their first win and deservedly so.”

Young added that Saturday’s win should give the team confidence moving forward.

“Any time you win you have that confidence…you never want to critique a win,” Young said. “We want to build off of that going into the weekend (against Swift Current).”

Overall, Young said he is pleased with the trajectory of his team roughly a month into the season.

“I think things are coming along. I think we’re starting to show a bit of an identity of what kind of team we want to be,” he said. “The girls are working hard, so those things are coming along. I think there’ll be a lot of parity in the league, so it’s the understanding of our hockey club that we have to be ready every night that we’re going to be playing.”

The Northern Bears will try to build off that win this weekend when they play a pair of games in Swift Current on Saturday and Sunday against the Wildcats.
