The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said avian flu has been detected on a commercial poultry farm in Chilliwack, BC.

The H-5-N-1 strain, which is spread through contact with an infected bird or its feces or nasal secretions, was first detected in Canadian farms in late 2021 and has continued to infect farms since then.

The agency’s latest available data showed there have been 330 infected flocks countrywide, affecting 7-million-773-thousand birds, as of Sept. 28.

Almost half of the birds culled were in B-C since April 2022 after 104 flocks were infected.

The Manitoba Ag Ex will celebrate its 50th year when it opens Wednesday at the Keystone Centre in Brandon.

Mark Humphries, general manager of the Provincial Exhibition, said this year’s event will feature the largest collection of livestock entries in years.

Manitoba Ag Ex is the largest all-breed cattle show in Manitoba, attracting exhibitors and visitors from all over the Prairie provinces.

Students across Brandon will get the chance to learn more about agriculture with Moo Mania, an event that offers hands-on educational opportunities for Grades 3, 4 and 5 students.

The federal transport and labour ministers are urging both sides to return to bargaining in a dispute that has shut down shipping on the St. Lawrence Seaway.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says the strike could lead to lost sales and revenue for small businesses already dealing with inflation and labour shortages.

Last year, about $16.7 billion worth of cargo moved through the system of locks, canals, and channels.
