HEALTH CARE CLOSER TO HOME

Victoria Hospital Foundation rebrands to Boreal Healthcare Foundation

Oct 11, 2023 | 12:04 PM

It’s the dawn of a new era for health care in northern Saskatchewan as the Victoria Hospital Foundation in Prince Albert has rebranded to the Boreal Healthcare Foundation.

The organization announced the move on Wednesday with a mandate to deliver better care, closer to home.

CEO Cody Barnett said this new identity will help multiple communities, not just Prince Albert.

“Rather than looking at Victoria Hospital and Herb Bassit and Pine View Terrace Care Homes, we’re also looking at ways to help communities like Kinistino and Creighton, Beauval, Buffalo Narrows, Ile-a-la-Crosse. It’s an expansion with the name change, that we’re adding capacity to be able to help other communities improve their health care close to home.”

The name for the foundation was derived from the boreal forests as they hope to serve all of northern Saskatchewan.

Barnett said they will be working with the Saskatchewan Health Authority on priority needs for facilities in the north but also reaching out to communities to hear their needs.

“We know community-driven care and improvements are always best. When the community pushes for a project, that’s really where the impact comes from,” he said referencing the Malhotra NICU at the Victoria Hospital as an example of that community support and push.

Barnett noted that donations to the foundation for the Victoria Hospital will still be to the centre’s greatest needs. The foundation is already gearing up for the annual Give a Little Life Day in December.
