P.A. porch pirate avoids jail time after entering early guilty plea

A woman who stole a package from a stranger’s doorstep and then bear-sprayed the person who came after her, will not serve any jail time or have a criminal record, providing she can abide by a number of conditions.

Mckenzie Belisle, 28, appeared Tuesday at Prince Albert Provincial Court and entered a guilty plea to a charge of assault with a weapon.

As part of her conditional discharge, she’ll be on nine months probation and will have to abide by a number of conditions including keeping the peace and not possessing any weapons.

The incident itself occurred in the afternoon this past Sunday in P.A.’s East Flat area.

According to facts read in court, Belisle was one of two people caught stealing a package. Noticing what had occurred, a neighbor gave chase and while confronting Belisle, received a long burst of bear spray to the face.

Belisle was then held to the ground by bystanders until police arrived and the package was recovered. The second person involved was neither identified nor caught.

Upon being arrested, Belisle was reportedly very aggressive and gave a false name. She, however, changed her tune once she was informed she could be further charged with obstruction of justice.

Describing his client’s actions as a spur of the moment and a stupid thing, Legal aid lawyer Dale Blenner-Hassett said Belisle, who has no criminal record, was following orders.

He also explained she took immediate responsibility and has shown remorse. Judge Steve Schiefner told Belisle he considers bear spray to be a very violent weapon.

“The Crown is giving you a break,” he said.

Reasons provided for the joint submission were Belisle’s early guilty plea, recovery of the package, and the suggestion that the second unnamed suspect was the leader.

A family member of the victim informed paNOW he still has blurry vision in one eye.

In addition to the Prince Albert charges, Belisle also has matters from Saskatoon which she is addressing through alternative measures.
