The Saskatchewan Roughriders continue to struggle as the team got handed its fifth straight loss by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday.

The Riders were able to hold Hamilton’s rushing attack in check for most of the game but gave up several big plays through the air.

The Riders’ defence gave up 271 passing yards and two touchdowns to Ti-Cats quarterback Matthew Shiltz who stepped in for Bo Levi Mitchell who had started the game.

Mitchell was taken out after the first quarter and had 129 passing yards and a touchdown by that point.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan’s offence struggled to get anything going in a game marred by stalled drives and turnovers.

Riders Quarterback Jake Dolegala had 154 yards and completed 16/25 passes.

The loss drops the Riders to 6-10. Saskatchewan is in third place in the West Division, four points ahead of the 4-11 Calgary Stampeders. The Riders’ current five-game losing streak is reminiscent of last season when they finished a 6-12 campaign with seven consecutive defeats.

The Riders’ offence struggled in the half, being held to 168 yards of total offence. Running back Jamal Morrow was the lone bright spot, rushing for 75 yards on 11 carries, including a 32-yard touchdown run on a third-and-one gamble with 34 seconds left in the half. Morrow finished the contest with 120 yards rushing on 18 carries.

In addition to a safety when Mitchell was called for intentional grounding while in the end zone, the Riders also got a 42-yard field goal from Brett Lauther.

Both teams return to action on Friday with the Riders travelling to Calgary to face the Stampeders while the Tiger-Cats host the B.C. Lions.
