Former P.A. Raider elected as 4th Vice Chief of FSIN

A former Prince Albert Raider has been elected as the next fourth Vice-Chief of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN).

Craig McCallum received just under half of the votes during Thursday’s election as he beat incumbent Heather Bear and former Wahpeton Councillor Curtis Standing. In total, 975 people voted with McCallum receiving 458 votes, while Bear got 419 and Standing getting 98.

“I feel a deep sense of gratitude for everyone (in attendance), everybody who supported me,” he said shortly after being elected at FSIN’s Assembly being held in Saskatoon.

McCallum, for the most part, was at a loss for words as he thanked those who voted for him.

“I hope I do right by you all and make you all proud,” he said.

People in Prince Albert may remember McCallum wearing the green and gold at the Art Hauser Centre during the 2009/10 season. He ended up leading the team in scoring with 72 points in 72 games.

McCallum has been working for Saskatoon Public Schools for the past three years, serving as the division’s Indigenous Student Advocate.

His campaign focused on First Nations youth, especially those who live in urban centres.

Meanwhile, Edward “Dutch” Lerat was once again elected as FSIN’s second Vice-Chief.

He defeated former Red Earth Cree Nation Chief Fabian Head. A total of 976 votes were cast with Lerat receiving 513 and Head getting 463.
