A former high commissioner of India in Canada said there was no need for the government to go public with an allegation the Indian government was involved in the killing of a Canadian citizen.

Vikas Swarup, who also served with India’s Ministry of External Affairs, was speaking at the Global Business Forum in Banff. He said the situation could have been solved at the diplomatic level.

Since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the accusation over one week ago, both countries have expelled one another’s representatives, and India has also temporarily halted all visa services for Canadian citizens.

Farm Credit Canada said it will match up to $1 million in new donations to food security agencies in Canada as its Drive Away Hunger program marks its twentieth year.

The program brings the agriculture and food industries together to support food banks and food security programs.

FCC’s match will also be shared by Food Banks Canada and Second Harvest Canada, which will direct the funding to underserved rural and remote areas needing support.

Cash and food donations can be made online at driveawayhunger.ca.

The PEI Federation of Agriculture is warning the Island could lose half of its farmland by 2050 if more action isn’t taken to preserve it.

Executive director Donald Killorn told a legislature committee the province lost 12.3 per cent of its farmland between 2016 and 2021.

He said the decline is risky because large processors like Cavendish Farms, Amalgamated Dairies Limited and Atlantic Beef Products require a certain level of raw product to stay in business.

The federation said subdivisions and development often drive farmland loss, and the province needs to take a more active role in reversing the trend.
