Raiders training camp wraps up with annual green-white game

The annual Green vs. White game put an exclamation point on Prince Albert Raiders training camp on Monday as the team wrapped up four days of on-ice activity at the Art Hauser Centre.

Czech-born prospect Matej Kubiesa scored twice to lead Team Green to a 6-2 win. Luke Moroz, Brayden Dube, Liam Bursaw, and Landen Sitarz also added goals for Team Green. Mikey Thomas and Oli Chenier scored for Team White.

“You just don’t go through an intersquad game just thinking it’s going to be another game,” said Raiders Head Coach Jeff Truitt. “This is an identity game… whether or not you’re knocking on the door. Tough decisions are going to have to be made, there’s no doubt about that. But you’re here to make a team and that’s what it’s all about.”

The team’s Director of Players Personnel Bruno Zarrillo also attended camp and was pleased with what he saw.

“I thought it was excellent,” said Zarrillo. “In terms of competitiveness, in terms of skill, the leadership from our veterans. From top to bottom, I thought it was lights out. It was excellent.”

“They’re your kids…you draft them then you watch them develop, you watch them grow,” Zarrillo continued. “And you hope they turn out to be the player you saw when you drafted them.”

Zarrillo also gave some insight into what’s next for the team’s staff as the Raiders get set to begin their pre-season schedule Wednesday afternoon against Saskatoon in Big River First Nation.

“We have to evaluate what we have here and what we’re lacking,” he said. “What we’re lacking, maybe we can find (through) someone else’s drop or a list player. Maybe someone that’s developed over a summer of training. Kids are always, at this age, they’re changing from day to day.”

“So we’ll get in the rinks and see if we can find some of the things…like we’ve talked about targeting a couple areas and we’ll see if we can address it.”

Truitt said his coaching staff will now start to look at line combinations leading into the pre-season as the evaluation process continues.

“We’ve got to find out how they rise up against the opponent now,” Truitt said. “We’ve played against each other long enough, now we get to go out and do it against other opponents here.”
