P.A.’s Kinsmen Water Park closes for season, Frank J. Dunn Pool weeks away from opening

People in Prince Albert wanting to swim in a public pool will most likely have to wait a couple of weeks to do so.

The Kinsmen Water Park officially closed for the season on Sunday, while the Frank J. Dunn Pool won’t open until next month. An exact date hasn’t been chosen, but it’s believed it will happen after the Labour Day Long Weekend.

The lack of availability is leaving at least one resident frustrated.

Anne Charles told paNOW she doesn’t understand why this happens each year.

“I’ve called Swift Current and North Battleford… they don’t have any time off. You’re looking at these communities that are much smaller and probably have less staff and less resources that are organized and can offer consistent swimming.”

Charles, P.A.’s 2022 Female Athlete of the Year, explained she now has to take a break from training for future events. She also knows other people in P.A. dealing with the same issue, including her sister.

“It really makes you feel like you have to leave P.A. to fully achieve your goals without limits,” she said.

Charles is also a physiotherapist at the Victoria Hospital.

One of the best treatments she uses with her patients is water therapy. This is especially the case for those with arthritis and high blood pressure.

“Aquatic therapy is so, so important to help keep people mobile, moving, and independent,” Charles added.

This won’t be a problem in P.A. in a couple of years when the city’s new arena and aquatics centre finishes construction. There’s no exact date on when this will happen, however, early estimated had it opening sometime in 2024.

“That’s going to be great, but they’re not doing anything now,” added Charles.
