Along with paNOW readers, an observer at the airport has confirmed a funnel cloud formed over the city and has now dissipated.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Terry Lang said such occurrences are not uncommon.

“The observation from the airport actually noted a funnel cloud and that it has dissipated,” said Lang.

paNOW was sent photos from several readers, including Sheldon Ermine, who first saw the cloud east of Wahpeton and took a second photo looking south from the Cornerstone area.

While these types of clouds can form and disappear and last 15 minutes or more, this particular cloud lasted for about eight minutes, said Lang.

Funnel clouds rarely touch down but when they do, can be very dangerous.

In that case, people should find immediate shelter in a sturdy building, and make sure they are on the ground floor and as near the middle as possible.
