It is a much-needed boost of support for Prince Albert’s Special Olympians.

Recently, the organization found out it would receive just over $12,000 in grant funding from the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association (CPRA).

Treasurer of P.A. Special Olympics Tyler Kowalski said the funds will help with facilities, particularly the bowling alley, storage facility, soccer field and golf course.

In tough economic times, he said every dollar they receive is important.

“It’s really hard to fundraise nowadays so getting a grant like that really helps us boost the funds in our account so we can provide our athletes the opportunity to compete,” he said.

After receiving the grant, the CPRA published a Success Story featuring local athlete Jacob Goulet. In the story, Goulet said the funding will help him play the sports he loves and keep registration fees low.

Tanner Svenson, another P.A. Special Olympian spoke to paNOW about how the grant funds will help not only himself but other athletes.

“It feels amazing to have all this money to do the programs that we love and do and to pay our travel fees and our bowling shirts, merchandise, equipment. It just feels really good.”

Svenson, who plays floor hockey, bocce, and bowling explained how essential Special Olympics is to him.

“It changed my whole life,” he said. “I started in 2017 and going into my seventh year now.”

Kowalski added the funds will ensure athletes have access to the programs they need, especially as they prepare for the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary which start Feb. 27, 2024.
