P.A. and area ready to celebrate Canada Day

Jun 30, 2023 | 12:00 PM

Canada will celebrate its 156th birthday on Saturday and Prince Albert and surrounding communities are ready to throw a party.

The riverbank in Prince Albert will once again be home to a multicultural event starting at 4 p.m. The event will feature activities and performances from different cultures including Indigenous Canadians.

It will culminate in a fireworks display that is set to start at 10:30 p.m.

The Canada Day festivities are being organized by the Prince Albert Multicultural Council which has been hosting the event for more than 30 years.

Executive Director Michelle Hassler said they had a couple years of virtual celebrations because of COVID restrictions but they’re elated to be back in person by the river.

She added this event is very special to the community and those who travel from outside P.A. to enjoy it.

“It is a unique way to be able to be welcoming and inclusive of all in the community,” said Hassler. “We want to be inclusive of everybody the best way we can in a very respectful manner and this gathering is not only to celebrate Canada, but this is more to celebrate all the beautiful cultures we have in our community, to bring the community together and use and make it as a platform for learning, for people to learn about the residential schools, for people to learn about the Indigenous histories. To learn about Canada’s history, but also for people to learn about all the various cultures in the community as well.”

The Prince Albert Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is also holding a celebration for Canada Day at Kinsmen Park starting at 11 a.m.

If you’re travelling to the National Park over the weekend, there are Canada Day celebrations taking place in Waskesiu.

Elisha Ryhorchuk is the Manager of the Waskesiu Recreation Association which is organizing the activities this year. She told paNOW they are starting the events on Friday night with bike decorating. A pancake breakfast will start the activities on Saturday with a parade rolling through the community from noon-1 p.m.

She added that last year, there were roughly 7,000 people who came to Waskesiu for Canada Day and anticipates that number will grow on Saturday.

“This year the park is predicting about 10,000 visitors. Considering that Canada Day is now on a Saturday as opposed to last year being during the week, so we are anticipating a few more visitors this year.”

The Resort Village of Candle Lake will be holding its annual Canada Day parade at 11 a.m. on Saturday followed by several activities and fireworks to end the night off of Waskateena Beach.

Struthers Lake Regional Park will have their Canada Day events run on Friday night with the Ball Blitz Game and Beach Volleyball match among other activities.

The Town of Birch Hills is also marking Canada Day with a bike parade, BBQ and fireworks at dusk.
