RCMP investigating after ammonia leak, multiple thefts at site north of Shellbrook

Jun 27, 2023 | 3:00 PM

RCMP are investigating after someone allegedly caused an ammonia leak north of Shellbrook.

Local fire and rescue were called to a Nutrien Site around 8 a.m. Sunday morning after getting reports of smoke and a potential chemical leak.

When they arrived, they found a gate had been driven through and a tank filled with anhydrous ammonia, a highly effective fertilizer used by farmers, was leaking from the valve.

Because of the gate, crews called the RCMP who discovered that someone broke in, stole the ammonia, but didn’t shut off the valve properly.

The next day, a fence around the site was cut open and fuel on the property was stolen. At this time, RCMP don’t know if the two incidents are related.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Ahtahkakoop/Shellbrook detachment at 306-468-2969. People wanting to stay anonymous can use the Crime Stoppers line at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or go to www.saskcrimestoppers.com.
