Jun 13, 2023 | 12:04 PM

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) said there are no current evacuees in the province because of wildfires but are prepared should that change.

In the latest update from the SPSA, 28 wildfires are burning in the province with five deemed not contained.

The biggest of the fires continues to be the Shaw wildfire between Buffalo Narrows and Île-à-la-Crosse, with almost 100,000 hectares burning.

As of Friday, the SPSA said there are no local State of Emergencies in effect in the province.

The City of Lloydminster, which housed thousands of evacuees from Buffalo Narrows and Buffalo River Dene Nation told meadowlakeNOW the evacuees have returned home.

While the fires themselves are not threatening residents, air quality because of smoke is still a concern. The most recent Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) for Buffalo Narrows is at 10+ which is very high risk.

Special Air Quality Statements are still in place for a large portion of the province, from the border with the Northwest Territories to as far south as Esterhazy.
